We do not collect personal data. In particular, we do not collect your device identifier or advertising ID (IDFA), IP address, location, contacts, browsing history, or any analytics or cross-app tracking data. The content you create in the app (notebooks, sections, works, sources, summaries, translations, glossaries, flashcards, and Apple Pencil notes) is stored on your device and in your own iCloud; it is not sent to us.
Because we receive no personal data, we do not use it for anything. The app processes your content locally on your device (and, at your request, sends selected text to an AI provider using your own key — see §4) solely to provide the reading and study features you invoke. There is no developer-side profiling, advertising, or resale of data.
Your library syncs across your own devices through your personal iCloud account (Apple’s private CloudKit database). We cannot see or access this data. Apple’s handling of iCloud is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy. The app’s on-device semantic search index is computed on your device and stored locally only; it is never synced or transmitted.
AI features (translation, summary, annotation, source-grounded chat, flashcards, glossary) work only if you supply your own API key for a third-party AI provider, currently one of: Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenAI, or Groq.
PaperReader offers an optional auto-renewable subscription, “PaperReader Pro” (monthly or yearly), which removes the free source limit. Purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store; we never receive your payment card or billing details. We only learn, from Apple’s on-device receipt, whether you currently hold an active entitlement. A count of how many free sources you have created is kept in your own iCloud key-value store so it stays consistent across your devices; it contains no personal content.
The app uses Apple platform services only: the device Keychain (to store your API keys securely), iCloud/CloudKit (to sync your library), and StoreKit (for subscriptions). The app does not request access to your camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, or health data. Document import uses the system file picker, which you invoke and control.
We do not share data with third parties for advertising or analytics — we use none. Data reaches a third party only in two cases, both under your control: (a) Apple, through your use of iCloud and the App Store; and (b) the AI provider you configure, when you actively use an AI feature with your own key. We may disclose information only if required by valid legal process — but since we hold no user content, there is nothing on our side to disclose.
Depending on where you live (for example under the EU/UK GDPR, California CCPA/CPRA, or Türkiye’s KVKK), you may have rights to access, correct, or erase personal data. Because we do not collect or hold personal data about you, there is nothing on our side to export or erase; you already control all of your content directly (see §15). For data held by Apple or by an AI provider, please contact them under their policies. You may contact us with any question and we will respond within 30 days.
When you use an AI feature, the text you submit is sent to the servers of the AI provider you selected, which may be located outside your country of residence. That transfer occurs between you and the provider under your own account; its lawfulness and safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) are governed by that provider’s terms.
We retain nothing, because we store nothing. Your content persists in your device and your iCloud for as long as you keep it there, and is removed when you delete it.
Your API keys are held in the device Keychain; all AI requests use encrypted HTTPS connections; your library is protected by Apple’s device and iCloud security. Because we run no servers and hold no user data, there is no developer-side data store that could be breached.
PaperReader is not directed to children under 16 and does not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, contact us and we will assist.
As we hold no user data on any server of ours, a developer-side breach of your content is not possible. In the unlikely event of an incident affecting any information we control, we will act promptly and, where applicable law requires (for example KVKK Article 12), provide notification within the required timeframe.
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above and post the new version at this address. Material changes will be highlighted with an updated effective date; continued use of the app after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance.
PaperReader has no user account. You are always in control: delete any item within the app, empty the trash for permanent deletion, or remove the app together with its iCloud data. Because we do not maintain our own servers for your content, there is no developer-side data store for us to purge.
